Growing up in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin, perhaps there’s little surprise that Jared James Nichols has tapped into the power of the blues. After all, this is where Stevie Ray Vaughan played his last ever show!
But there’s more to this man, who’s now based in Los Angeles, than a connection to this blues great. He seems to have been born to entertain. Just two weeks after he got his first electric guitar at the age of 14, Nichols was ripping it up onstage with Chicago veterans, and since then he’s played live with such masters as Buddy Guy, ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards and ‘Big Jim’ Johnson. In fact, by the time he hit 21, the man had racked up over 500 gigs, and had opened for the likes of Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Having learnt some of his technique at the Berklee School Of Music in Boston, in 2012 he released debut EP ‘Live At Te Viper Room’. This got him acclaim and attention as a bona fide, blues drenched cranker. Someone who knows how to get the most out of his guitar, his voice, the song and also the audience.
This has been followed by a second EP, ‘Old Glory & The Wild Revival’. This not only channels the sweat and grime you want from the blues, but opens it up to an arena size sound. It’s authentic right down to the bare bones, but Nichols knows how to pick up the pace and let go of the throttle.
Having recently played live with ZZ Top and Kid Rock, Nichols is proving blues when played with this sort of desire moves people and shifts the planet!
