The Picture Books
There’s a real whiff of diesel about this German duo. But then Fynn Claid Grabke (vocals/guitar) and Philipp Mirtschink (drums) did record their most recent album, 2014’s ‘Imaginary Horse’, in the same garage where they work on their motorcyles!
The pair first met at a local skate park, and quickly realised they shard a mutual music interest. The likes of The Cure and Minor Threat. Using equipment belonging to Grabke’s father, himself a musician and record producer, the band began to write songs. This led to the release of the album ‘Maybe If We Run’ in 2007. Two years later, the duo issued the EP ‘Rochelle Rochelle’, with second album ‘List Of People To Kill’ following later in ’09. And ‘Artificial Tears’ came out in 2010.
On the live front, The Picturebooks have toured with the likes of the Interantional Noise Conspiracy, 65daysofstatic and Spinnerette, and made their mark in America when given the chance to support the Eagles Of Death Metal. What all this has meant is that these Germans have created a vibe around them that’s exciting and burning. Their approach to the blues might be fuzzed up and revving in the red zone, but also has an intelligent soul. This has been helped by an enthusiasm for building their own instruments, including percussion, and Mirtschink doesn’t always use sticks – sometimes he bashes the toms with mallets!
Now signed to Another Century Records, The Picturebooks are set to be one of the most talked about bands of 2017; they’ll do this with an imaginative proactivity. It’s custom built, supercharged blues.
